I noticed how many people thus far had trouble getting into the first chapter of Middlesex. While it has taken me a while to get through it in the onset, I actually really started to get into the novel, and I believe that Jeffrey Eugenides presents the character basis extremely well.

I must admit that a few items confused me, such as who is chapter 11 and what the hell is going on. But thus far I have truly enjoyed the novel. I found it very interesting that the author decided to write about a mutated chromosome and its journey. Also I found that the presentation of this information is truly genius. While reading into the 2^nd and 3^rd pages I thought that I was confused about what I was reading, but the author presents his information in a unique and challenging manner that certainly requires upmost thought.

Thus far I enjoyed learning about the time before the conception perhaps the most and the relationship between Cal’s mother and father. The transitions and random facts make this book far more interesting and personable.

Queer Theory

I wasn’t sure what to write as a blog entry so I chose Queer Theory as my topic as that is what is on my mind at the moment. When the question arose of the definition of Queer Theory, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I had an idea that it was most likely about what is thought to be abnormal. As we had just looked a little bit about sex and gender I figured that it must have to do with stereotypes as well. After learning a bit about queer theory in class I identify this theory as an identification of something that could be considered out of daily societal norms.

Queer Theory in my opinion relates quite a bit to stereotypical labels in a sort of general manner. I believe that categorizing individuals sets them apart from the “norms” of a sort of imagined community, therefore putting them as abnormal or “queer” in relationship to themselves. Honestly I really dislike stereotypes and labels in general because I do not believe that ANYONE has the same definition of normal. Norms and practices vary entirely depending on the given individual.

In relation to my experiences I suppose people could label me as abnormal, or queer, or whatever for that matter because I am very sarcastic and have a dry sense of humor. To some people, this behavior comes out as awkward and outright rude… but I am not, I promise! In retrospect and as a little note it is very difficult to point out things you may do, or that the people you associate do, that can be considered “queer”.
